About the teacher
Karen Kirkness started practising yoga in the late 1990s with her first Ashtanga teacher, Daniela Ellis, in Florida. After finishing her bachelor's degree in Arts & Sciences (2002), she completed her 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Koh Samui, Thailand, then continued her yoga studies in India. Karen studied with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore in 2003, the first of 4 trips to practice Ashtanga Vinyasa with the Jois family in the Mysore shala.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is known for its intensity, a quality that initially drew Karen to its transformative power. Now a parent and midlife woman navigating all the changes, Karen's approach to teaching yoga embraces the individual circumstances of each student.
Karen has completed a dissection-based masters degree in Human Anatomy and a PhD in Medical Sciences alongside her yoga studies. Her commitment to supporting others on the path of yoga is evident in the evolution of her personal practice: adaptve multidisciplinary, playful yet evidence-based.
If you are keen to embrace your changing stages of life with a yoga practice that evolves, Karen's class is a good fit.
MarjoryÂ
"I have practiced Ashtanga yoga with Karen Kirkness since her move to the Scottish Borders a few years ago. Knowing her to be one of Scotland’s leading Ashtanga teachers, I felt assured of teaching excellence.
Ashtanga yoga can be a strong practice, but Karen's awareness of safe practice, and knowledge of assists and adaptations, supports me and gives me the confidence to try more challenging postures. Her instructions are clear and her encouragement gentle.
Ashtanga is not just about the physical practice. Moving with the breath, it can have a meditative quality too. For me, Ashtanga yoga is beneficial for both body and soul.
Karen’s sunny and positive outlook, her ability to inspire and encourage, and the warmth and kindness in her teaching, means I leave her classes with the perfect balance of energy and stillness."
